The government has instructed online dating firms to create a set of guidelines that prioritize the safety of users, aiming to safeguard them from instances of sexual misconduct and aggression.

The code of conduct must be implemented by the online dating industry by the middle of next year.

The Albanese government has sent a letter to online dating companies, expressing their concern about the safety of users. They have warned that if these companies do not make necessary improvements to their code, the government may be compelled to enact laws requiring them to prioritize user safety.

This action is in response to concerns about sexual violence and harassment, which led the government to organize a National Roundtable on Online Dating Safety in January.

According to recent statistics, the number of individuals utilizing dating apps nationwide exceeds three million.

A recent study conducted by the Australian Institute of Criminology indicated that in the five-year period leading up to 2021, approximately 75% of individuals utilizing dating apps or websites encountered various forms of sexual violence. This research was released in October.

The acts of violence encompassed various forms such as sexual harassment, the use of abusive or intimidating language, the sharing of explicit images without consent, and actively following and monitoring someone’s activities.

According to the government, although some online dating platforms have implemented safety measures for their users, the level of effort varies within the industry. Consequently, a more teamwork-oriented approach is required.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland emphasized the importance of the collaboration between online dating platforms and the eradication of violence against women.

According to Rowland, the prevalence of dating apps as a means of meeting partners in Australia is high. However, the extent of violence encountered by users on these platforms is deeply worrisome.

That is the reason why I have made the decision to create a chance for individuals in the online dating sector to collaborate as a team in order to tackle the concerns raised by the Government.

Nevertheless, I have explicitly stated that if the industry does not enhance safety results for Australians, we will not delay in creating alternative laws.
