As the digital world grows increasingly sophisticated, so too do the opportunities for scammers to target unsuspecting consumers. Australians know all too well the breach of privacy that occurs when companies are hit with scams or cybersecurity breaches–such as the Optus and Medibank breaches of 2022–but the public can also be targeted on a smaller (yet still devastating) scale.

In fact, according to ACCC figures, Australians lost a record amount of more than $3.1 billion to scams in 2022–a mammoth increase on the already-giant $2 billion that was lost in 2021.

It’s not an occurrence happening solely on our shores, either. In the United Kingdom, the government is developing a new scheme that will oblige banks to compensate scam victims as the losses continue to grow.

The rule is being enforced by the UK’s Payment Systems Regulator, and will see reimbursements costs split equally between the bank that sends the payment and the bank that receives it.

Chris Hemsley, from the Payment Systems Regulator, told the ABC it was a change needed to better protect consumers from serious harm and give them confidence in the financial system.

According to the ABC, the UK’s bold experiment will test whether making the banking industry liable will drive down losses by incentivising banks to invest in detection and prevention.

As to whether Australia will–or should–follow suit with the new enforcements, Forbes Advisor Australia spoke to the ACCC and a leading cybersecurity expert to take a closer look.
