Optus has introduced new technology that will intervene to protect its customers when they try to call phone numbers associated with known scammers.

Advanced System Care – Help Keep Scammers Away by Cleaning and Secureing Your PC Effectively and Keeping it that Way

The “Call Stop” system has been designed to target “call back” scams where customers receive an email or text asking them to call their bank, claiming there is issues with their bank account.

From this week, when Optus customers try to ring a phone number provided in one of those scam messages, the call will instead be diverted to a warning voice message.

Customers will hear the message: “The number you have called has been reported as being used for scam activities. For information, please visit optus.com.au/CallStop”.

The call will then be blocked and customers will need to take no further action, according to Optus.

Optus has developed the system in collaboration with the Australian Financial Crimes Exchange (AFCX) and Australian banks.

Optus vice president of regulatory and public affairs Andrew Sheridan has said the company is always looking for new ways to fight scammers.

“Call Stop is our latest weapon in this battle,” he said.

People are also advised not to click on any URLs or use any contact details provided in the texts.
