Australians are being urged to strengthen their passwords after new data revealed many are using weak passwords.

Last year thousands of Australian consumers fell victim to security breaches with a significant amount of personal information and data leaked.

This raised calls for better online protections, however, already in 2023 Australians have lost $194 million to scams and data hacking, according to ScamWatch data.

One way to better protect your personal information online is to ensure you have a strong password. Millions of Australians use passwords on bank accounts, Facebook and Google accounts every day.

Data from software company ForgeRock revealed more than one in five (21 per cent) of Australians reuse three passwords across multiple logins.

Meanwhile, one in 10 are reusing a single password across all logins — raising risks of data breaches.

Two in five (44 per cent) admitted to writing passwords down.

What are the weakest passwords?

ForgeRock shared a general list of easy to guess passwords that many Australians still use:

  • 123456
  • 123456789
  • Qwerty
  • Password
  • (password)
  • Abc123
  • Name + year of birth
  • Love
