LIVINGSTON COUNTY — The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office wants to make residents aware of a recent increase in “imposter scams,” when someone impersonates a government official, law enforcement officer, court or loved one to trick victims into sending money.

According to an email from Undersheriff Jason Pless, a new form of the scam recently surfaced. In this form, an email is sent informing the recipient they have a fine due to the court and must make a payment right away. The email includes multiple areas where the recipient can pay the bogus fine.

“Emails and telephone calls that you may receive can be very convincing and are geared to intimidate victims into paying bogus fines or emergency bonds or be threatened of arrest,” Pless wrote in an email Thursday. “Law enforcement and the courts will never contact you via e-mail or telephone and ask for cash or gift card payments.”
