New Zealand banks are providing compensation to customers who were deceived into sending money to scammers, but a few require them to sign confidentiality agreements prior to receiving any reimbursement.

Interestconz has received information about instances in New Zealand where individuals have fallen victim to scams, making payments unknowingly to criminals. In return, these individuals have been offered a portion of their lost funds as compensation by their banks, under the condition that they keep the agreement confidential.

Fraud victims express frustration and fatigue from their complex and draining exchanges with their bank following the scam incident. Despite their discomfort, they had no alternative but to sign a confidentiality agreement in order to recover their funds.

One deceived client of the bank expressed his distress over a substantial sum of money that he had lost. I couldn’t help but wonder if I would make any progress as time dragged on. I questioned if this situation would ever be resolved, feeling eager to finally move forward in my life.

In certain instances, victims of bank fraud have chosen to settle for only half of the amount that had been stolen from them, despite suffering significant financial losses from scams.

Banks are obligated to reimburse customers affected by unauthorized payment scams as per the NZ Banking Code of Practice. However, individuals who willingly make payments to scammers are generally not eligible for reimbursement.

“I am perplexed by their claim that I gave authorization,” expressed one victim. “I authorized a payment of one dollar and fifty cents. “
