A new scam has emerged as criminals pretending to be from the United Nations offer travellers millions to unknowingly traffick drugs into Australia.

Federal police are investigating the scam after its officers earlier this year arrested two alleged drug mules in separate incidents in Melbourne.

They both claimed to be victims of the scam, in which fake United Nations officers requested the transport of a suitcase on their behalf in exchange for up to $35 million.

Australian Federal Police Commander Raegan Stewart said the ruse showed the lengths offenders will go to – including scamming travellers to do their “dirty work”.

“The AFP urge anyone travelling to our country who has been approached by an individual offering them a job opportunity to transport luggage in exchange for lucrative amounts of money, we warn them think twice, if it’s too good to be true – it probably is,” she said in a statement.

The scam alert comes after the Border Force conducted two separate baggage examinations at Melbourne’s International Airport this year.
