Livingston County Sheriff Mike Murphy is warning of a scam that the sheriff’s office has become aware of.

The sheriff’s office has had an uptick of attempted email and phone scams in the past week in Livingston County.

On Thursday, Sept. 7, a potential victim contacted the Livingston County Circuit Court to confirm whether an email they received was valid and learned that it was in fact a bogus request. Murphy said by checking with the court, the potential victim saved themselves significant monetary loss and from becoming crime victim.

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office would like to make the residents aware of the recent “imposter scams” — when criminals impersonate a government official, a law enforcement officer, business, court or a trusted friend or family member to trick victims into sending money.

A new form of the scam the sheriff’s office is seeing is con artists, posing as a collection entity for the Livingston County Courts or the Sheriff’s Office, send an email to their intended fraud victim. The email advises the recipient they have a “fine” due to the court and must make an immediate payment.

Within the email there are multiple areas where the person receiving the email can click a link and pay the “bogus” fine.

Emails and telephone calls that you may receive can be very convincing and are geared to intimidate victims into paying bogus “fines” or emergency “bonds” or be threatened of arrest.
